I have recently been reading a Biography on Amy Carmichael who is one of my all-time favorite missionaries. I have admired her devotion to God since my early childhood and reading this book has strengthened by respect for her. I have included some excperts from the book that are from Amy's personal letters as well as notes from her bible. Amy Carmichael had a gift for writing poetry which is clearly evidenced throughout her many writings.
"Thou hast put goodness in my heart.
Thou will perfect that which concerneth me.
Lord, let the glow of thy great love
Through my whole being shine."
Another example of her poetry is:
"Think truly, and thy thoughts shall be
Spotless with God's own purity.
On every though-bud let us bear
The stamp of truth, and love and prayer."
Amy also liked to frequently quote scripture verses and hyms:
"Jesus loves me! He will stay
close beside me all the way.
Thou has bled and died for me;
I will henceforth live for Thee."
"Jesus I am resting resting,
in the joy of what Thou art
I am finding out the greatness
Of Thy loving heart." - This poem was based fromZechariah 9:17.
Amy's devotion to God is such an encouragement to me; she trusted in Him to provide for all of her needs. Amy Carmichael was able to have such an impact in the world for Christ because she did not limit God's power and strength by making expectations of Him but rather she served him fully and unreservidly. She truly is a Woman who's life is worth imitating because her life reflected Christ to all the people around her.
